Reduction of Air Pollution

The use of renewable energy sources is increasingly becoming a key factor in environmental protection and the reduction of harmful gas emissions.

Among them, geothermal energy – particularly hydrogeothermal energy – represents one of the most sustainable solutions for urban district heating systems. Its application could be of major importance for Valjevo, a city that has faced serious environmental challenges in recent years.

Traditional heating systems in Valjevo largely rely on fossil fuels such as coal and heavy fuel oil. The consequences are high emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), which significantly deteriorate air quality. For this reason, Valjevo frequently ranks among the most polluted cities in Serbia during the winter months.

The introduction of hydrogeothermal heating systems would create a real opportunity to reverse this trend.

Geothermal energy is based on the use of heat from underground water. It is locally available, constant, and reliable, and its exploitation does not release harmful gases into the atmosphere. This directly reduces air pollution, contributing to a healthier environment and a higher quality of life for citizens. In addition, such a system does not depend on fuel imports, but instead relies on natural resources located within the territory of Valjevo and its surroundings.

Clean Heat 24/7

Geothermal energy is a continuously available, stable, and reliable heating solution that has powered urban district heating networks worldwide for decades.

The Paris Basin, for example, has been using the so-called “doublet system” for geothermal heating for more than 40 years. This system pumps hot water (55–80°C) from underground reservoirs for district heating and reinjects it back into the same reservoir at approximately 40°C. This sustainable closed-loop system currently provides heating for around 250,000 households in the wider Paris area.

Geothermal heating is a proven technology. Introducing this model in Valjevo would mean reliable, affordable, and clean energy from local resources.

Cost Reduction

The benefits of hydrogeothermal energy are not only environmental. Its use also reduces heating costs in both the short and long term, as it represents a stable and price-competitive energy source.

The development of such projects can also stimulate new investments, job creation, and strengthening of the local economy, bringing multiple benefits to Valjevo.

At a time when sustainable development is becoming a global priority, Valjevo has a unique opportunity to become an example of a city oriented toward cleaner and more innovative solutions. By implementing geothermal district heating systems, harmful gas emissions would be significantly reduced, air quality would improve, and a more secure energy future would be ensured.

By harnessing the potential of hydrogeothermal energy, Valjevo can take a decisive step toward becoming a healthier, greener, and more prosperous city — for the benefit of present and future generations.
